Alzheimer’s Research UK backs Baroness Casey’s call for greater focus by the Government on dementia

Earlier this month (March 2026) Baroness Louise Casey, with the support of Alzheimer’s Research UK, called on the Government to move faster on dementia — including improving diagnosis and supporting trials of new treatments.

This follows growing pressure from campaigners. Many backed the campaign to make dementia diagnosis a right, and Baroness Casey echoed those calls by highlighting the need to reduce waiting times from diagnosis to treatment.

Wes Streeting has said dementia is “one of the greatest challenges of our time” and pledged that the UK should become a world leader in dementia clinical trials.

The Department for Health and Social Care is now reviewing how the UK Government will invest in clinical trials and has promised to set out its plans in the coming weeks.

Many of you helped push dementia higher up the political agenda by supporting our campaign to make dementia diagnosis a right.

Now we need the Government to turn these commitments into action.

“Right now, everything is in place except the political decision to get going.

The science is ready. The money is available. People with dementia don’t have time to waste. It’s time to act.” Hilary Evans-Newton, Chief Executive, Alzheimer’s Research UK

Dementia is the UK’s leading cause of death – there’s no time to waste.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has pledged that the UK should lead the world in dementia clinical trials – but we need action, not words. Following calls from Baroness Casey, supported by Alzheimer’s Research UK, the Government is reviewing how it will invest in trials and dementia research.

Clinical trials are a vital lifeline for people with dementia and their families – it’s time for Streeting to deliver.
