Marathon Tours & Travel launches inaugural Amazon Marathon in Peru

Marathon Tours & Travel has announced the launch of the Amazon Marathon, a new endurance event set to take place in the Peruvian Amazon in September 2026.

Scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the race will be held in Puerto Maldonado, situated on the edge of the rainforest. The event offers marathon, half marathon, and 10.5km distances, all conducted on a looped jungle trail course.

Capacity for the inaugural year is intentionally limited to approximately 50 runners to maintain an intimate experience. Unlike self-supported jungle ultra-marathons, the Amazon Marathon is delivered as a fully packaged, hosted programme. All international participants are required to travel as part of the official itinerary to manage safety, sustainability, and logistics in the remote environment.

Jeff Adams, President of Marathon Tours & Travel, saidThe Amazon Marathon is the definition of a bucket-list race. It’s not just about covering the distance, it’s about where you are, what you are able to experience and the stories you take home. Running in the Amazon rainforest is something very few people ever get to do, and we’re proud to be launching an event that makes that possible in a safe, supported and unforgettable way.”

The programme includes domestic transfers within Peru, accommodation in Lima and specialised jungle lodges, and on-the-ground support. Runners also have the option of a post-race extension to visit the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

The event is supported by the Bajo Madre de Dios Tourism Association. Sandra Fernández, Biologist and President of the association, said “Hosting the Amazon Marathon is a great honour for us and we are excited to expand our partnerships, supporting this important ecosystem for humanity as a whole.”

Marathon Tours & Travel, founded in 1979, operates offices in Boston, MA, USA; Manchester, UK; and Adelaide, Australia.
