Petzl devises The Lunar Round, an exciting new Round in the Lake District to be completed between sunset and sunrise

The Lunar Round, devised by Petzl and in association with The Climbers Shop, is a series of summits that must be reached in order either clockwise or anti-clockwise, starting from The Climbers Shop in Ambleside, The Lake District.

The round must be completed between sunset and sunrise, with each season presenting its own challenges.

The Lunar Round is approximately 40km with 2,900m ascent and must include the Summits: Red Screes, Little Hart Crag, Dove Crag, Hart Crag, Fairfield, Seat Sandal,Steel Fell, Calf Crag, High Raise, Harrison Stickle, Blea Rigg, Silver Howe, Loughrigg.

The Lunar Round is not waymarked and there is no fixed route between the summits, route choice is entirely down to your own navigation.

How Do I Get Involved?

The Lunar Round can be walked or run at any time of the year in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, the only caveat being that you must complete your round between sunset and sunrise.

In midwinter this can give around 15 hours to complete your round but you could face some challenging Lake District conditions! In mid summer the time available drops to around 6 1/2 hours and although conditions may be far better you might still experience some challenging Lake District conditions!

As usual, please exercise good mountain sense and be prepared for rapidly changing weather, night navigation and the full set of challenges a round can throw at you in the dark of our mountains.

“The Lunar Round is a challenging prospect at anytime of the year, the option to have more or less time depending on the date adds a nice little extra!”

Petzl Headlamps

Over 50 years ago, Petzl invented the first battery powered headlamp giving lighting where it’s needed, when it’s needed, with hands-free functionality. Today there are over a dozen headlamps that make up our range with models developed specifically for both sport and professional users.

The Lunar Round must be completed entirely in the hours of darkness, which means you’ll need a headlamp, but which one? Ambient light, weight, brightness, ease of use, cost, comfort and stability are all key factors when deciding which headlamp to use with Petzl continuing to be at the forefront of design and innovation with the new NAO® RL joining the SWIFT® RL, IKO® CORE & BINDI® in our trail running range.
