ABOUT RIA

IMPROVING THE SPORT AND BUSINESS OF RUNNING

Welcome to Running Industry Alliance (RIA)

We are here to help create alignment in the running industry through collaboration and innovation. Our focus is on building a thriving community and network that drives commercial growth for your business. As a member, you will have access to an inclusive platform that collectively solves problems and amplifies excellent work. You will become part of a larger conversation and a unified voice that breaks down barriers and strengthens the industry.

We provide our Members with alternative and effective ways to connect through a safe and social business environment.

Where we came from – Running Industry Alliance (RIA) was created in January 2022 with a simple but powerful purpose: to unite the UK and Ireland running industry under one collaborative roof with a global reach. Born out of conversations across brands, retailers, events, communities, charities, services, and media, RIA was set up to bring the industry together, create meaningful connections, and tackle shared challenges – together. From day one, the focus has been on collaboration over competition – building a trusted space where the whole industry can thrive, innovate, learn and grow stronger together. This has allowed us to develop further collaborations and focusses for the industry including now a merger with Triathlon Industry Alliance (TIA) for a Multisport approach across RIA x TIA, Running Industry Awards, The Running Conference presented by haku, Triathlon Industry Conference and more by working together as an industry.

Our values are aligned with the following:

VISIBILITY: Proactively ensuring that running is at the forefront of conversations and RIA Members are visible across channels and actively involved in various discussions.
AWARENESS: Showcasing RIA Members news, partnerships, recruitment needs, sponsorship opportunities and awareness of RIA Member activity through RIA channels (B2B and B2C).
GROWTH: Working collaboratively together with a connected approach and a focus on collective growth across the whole running sector and supported thread to and from sectors both in the UK & Ireland and globally.
CONNECTION: Connecting members to start conversations and creating connectivity and new opportunities through RIA Membership and ongoing support to nurture and thrive together and as an industry.
INSIGHTS: Establishing the true value of the Running sector through shared research, insights, data and facts.
BENEFITS: Delivering purpose-built member benefits, supporting content, facilitating access to educational topics and discussions with face-to-face meet-ups and opportunities to do business together in a supported, like-minded and safe business environment.
RECRUITMENT: Nurturing new and existing talent to assist in progressing the sectors and keep moving forward with expertise, knowledge and experience.
NETWORKING: A mix of RIA Member networking and social events includes the RIA Spring Gathering, held in April in London, and the OTS Trade Show, held in June in Liverpool. Our largest event is the annual members-only The Running Conference, held in December in Loughborough. It is a key in-person yearly conference for the Running Industry to meet, learn, and conduct business together.
SUPPORT: Support between RIA Members has created an ecosystem of positive energy and a propelling forward nature. As a collective, RIA focuses on the priority subjects that need attention, sharing knowledge, education and best practices for all to be aware of what is required to be done now and for future generations to ensure a thriving industry,

By uniting the industry through one collaborative network, RIA connects people, creates opportunities, shares knowledge, and drives growth. What Does RIA Do?

What does RIA do?
RIA brings together all sectors of the running industry into a connected, ongoing conversation — helping to galvanise, align, energise, elevate, inform, educate, collaborate, and advance the industry while creating an amplified voice for its members. At its core, RIA drives focus and purpose through a thriving community and ecosystem for everyone involved.

Members benefit from purpose-built support, promotional opportunities, and industry connectivity, alongside flagship events: The Running Conference (TRC) each December and The Spring Gathering (TSG) each April — dedicated spaces for the industry to connect, learn, and do business together.

RIA also runs additional member meetups throughout the year, both online and in person, and is expanding opportunities through member-led events, plus European and global partnerships.

“We exist to collectively assist our members to drive the Running Industry forward and improve both the sport and business of running”

Who is RIA For?

Who is RIA built for?

Running Industry Alliance (RIA) is built for every part of the running industry business collective — across all sizes, scales, and stages of growth. Membership spans 10 defined verticals:

  • Brands

  • Retailers

  • Buying Groups & Distributors

  • Events

  • Charities

  • Communities

  • Media

  • NGBs & NGOs

  • Services

  • Suppliers

As an independent, member-based (trade / B2B) organisation, RIA provides a safe and collaborative business space where members can connect, share opportunities, and work together for the benefit of the whole industry.

RIA membership reflects the diversity of the running industry across the UK & Ireland, with strong European and global connections. Many international members join to engage with the UK & Ireland market, and vice versa. Whether you’re an established business, a new entrant, or a service provider connected to running — RIA has been built for you.

Through its ecosystem, RIA:

  • Creates connectivity and opens opportunities that may have seemed out of reach or too time-consuming.

  • Amplifies member voices and shares industry opportunities within a supportive, collaborative climate.

  • Drives important conversations — from future vision to best practice — and facilitates the “difficult conversations” that move the industry forward.

  • Acts as a bridge across sectors and geographies, uniting parallel industries where running is the common thread.

  • Provides structure and support through an experienced industry team, helping members cut through noise, save time, and focus on growth.

RIA is B2B, built for the businesses that power running. Its members are a mix of B2C and B2B organisations who collectively share a simple goal: to strengthen, support, and grow the running industry.

RIA Pillars and Focus Areas

RIA Focus Areas

Through ongoing feedback from RIA Members and discussions at The Running Conference, a number of focus areas have been defined to guide industry-wide work from 2024–2028. These sit across the four pillars of RIA: Membership, Events, Awards, and Data.

Top-line focus areas for Running Industry Alliance in 2025 include:

  • The Marketplace – strengthening business opportunities, innovation, and commercial growth.

  • Research, Data & Insights – driving knowledge-led decisions through collective intelligence.

  • Health & Wellbeing – supporting the positive impact of running on individuals, communities, and society.

  • Sustainability – championing environmental and social responsibility across the industry.

  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) – ensuring the running industry is open, accessible, and representative for all.

  • Future – anticipating trends, embracing innovation, and preparing the industry for what’s next.

By anchoring these focus areas to our four pillars, RIA continues to create tangible impact: connecting and supporting members, hosting industry-leading events, celebrating excellence, and building stronger insight and knowledge for the collective.

RIA Governance

How We Are Governed
Transparent. Collaborative. Industry-led.

Our Governance Structure at Running Industry Alliance (RIA)
Running Industry Alliance (RIA) is an independent member-based alliance for the UK & Ireland’s running industry with global reach. We are proudly independent, commercially minded, and rooted in collaboration. To ensure we serve our members with integrity and future-focus, we operate a governance structure that reflects the diversity and dynamism of our industry.

Powered by Members, For Members
At Running Industry Alliance, we proudly practice what we promote. All professional services used by RIA – including accounting, insurance, IT systems, marketing, operations, project, creative and event services – are sourced exclusively from within our Member Community wherever possible.

This ensures our investment cycles back into the industry, amplifies member businesses and fosters a trusted, mutually beneficial network. It’s one of the many ways we live our values and demonstrate active collaboration in action.

RIA Strategic Management Team and RIA Core Team
At the heart of RIA is our Strategic Management Team – a leadership group of senior industry professionals who collectively guide decision-making, oversee strategy and ensure delivery of RIA’s mission – led by our CEO. They meet quarterly and are supported by a wider operational team.

We also convene a wider RIA Core Team (all channels), Data Team and Run Team (Brand and Retail focus) who meet monthly to share insight, raise and advise on key topics and represent different segments of the industry. All meetings are with an agenda and actionable next steps by each that are tracked to maintain transparency and keep momentum.

RIA Alliance Advisory Board
Our Advisory Board comprises up to 32 industry leaders and all RIA Members, representing across all ten industry channels that RIA works to – including:

  • Brands
  • Retailers
  • Events
  • Community
  • Charity
  • Services
  • Suppliers
  • Media
  • NGOs/NGBs
  • Distributors/Buying Groups

The board is paralleled between “Now” and “Future” members to ensure continuity, succession, and innovation. They provide insight, challenges and connection across the ecosystem.

RIA Alliance Partners
Alongside our Governance structure and Advisory Board, our Alliance Partners play a key role in strengthening the ecosystem. These partnerships are designed to act as fast-track bridges between Members and trusted organisations, providing access to expertise, services, and opportunities that directly support business growth. We are currently reviewing all existing partnerships to ensure they continue to deliver maximum value, while also exploring new collaborations that align with our Members’ needs and the future of the industry.

Working Groups
We have initiated with Members on RIA x TIA working groups around key topics raised for additional focus including Women’s MultiSport Action Group – WMAG and NextGen. Regular working group meetings are held and minutes documented for next actionable steps for that group and overall.

Triathlon Industry Alliance (TIA)
TIA follows structure and governance with an independent board of Industry professionals and working groups, who are all TIA Members.

RIA Events
All RIA in-person and on-line events are member-only based to ensure a safe business space where members can freely interact with each other and know that everyone attending is a RIA and / or TIA Member. A supported eco-system.

Our Governance Principles
RIA aligns with good governance standards through five key principles:

  1. Structure – Clear and accountable decision-making, with a member-first mindset.
  2. People – Board, teams and working groups  made up of diverse, experienced, and committed professionals.
  3. Communication – Transparent, two-way dialogue with our members and industry stakeholders.
  4. Standards and Conduct – Ethical, fair, and professional at every level.
  5. Policies and Process – Legally compliant, risk-aware and forward-thinking.

We work in line with Tier 1 guidance from Sport England’s Code of Governance, adapting best practice for our commercial and independent member organisation model.
