PLYMOUTH PREPARES FOR DEVON’S BIGGEST DAY OF RUNNING

The captivating views from the seafront on the Hoe will provide a spectacular setting for a record breaking day of running on Sunday, May 11th, as Britain’s Ocean City Running Festival takes centre stage.

Devon’s biggest day of running will feature four separate events and in excess of 10,000 participants, who, between them, are set to complete the equivalent of three circuits of the world.

The headline distance, the famous Plymouth Half Marathon, which has four thousand successful applicants, will be Devon’s biggest running event of the year, and will feature runners of all abilities from across the U.K. and beyond, thus providing a significant boost to the regional economy.

As with the half marathon, the shorter 10k and 5k events reached their entry limit, and the special day of activity will reach its finale with the hugely popular Primary Schools Challenge, with 62 schools represented on the start line as children complete their last mile of a 12 week running programme.

The day will also feature a team challenge as part of the 10k and half marathon, which is sponsored by Steve Hoskin Construction. Teams of four or more will compete for the fastest aggregate time, with a trophy and a donation to the charity of their choice up for grabs to the winners.

But the real victors on the day will be the hundreds of charities who will benefit from runners taking part for them, who are expected to raise a combined total in excess of half a million pounds for good causes. Local charity Jermiah’s Journey will have a team of more than 70 taking part on the day.

New for 2025 are two special waves of runners each featuring more than 150 people across the distances. The NHS Blue Wave and Plymouth Argyle’s Green Army Wave will provide extra colour and excitement to the special day on the city calendar.

Suzi Cumberland, Managing Director of event organisers Taurus, says, “This year promises to be bigger and better than ever, and will not just be a running event, but a celebration of spirit and endeavour. We are very proud to be staging Devon’s biggest day of running.”

The action kicks off at 09:15 on Sunday with the half marathon, and organisers are encouraging spectators to cheer the runners every step of the way.
